Leaders recognise the importance of graduation ceremonies
Batley Girls High School in West Yorkshire has recently received high praise from schools inspectorate OFSTED. Approaches by school leaders to motivate pupils in Key Stage 3 included a graduation ceremony with Graduation Hat and Gowns supplied by leading UK supplier Graduation Attire.
OFSTED were impressed with the range of approaches that were used to drive pupils aspirations for the future. These strategies included early careers education, information, advice and guidance with the system of graduation used to enhance motivation to succeed in Key Stage 3 and beyond. They went on to say:
“The system of Key Stage 3 graduation provides significant motivation of pupils to achieve and promotes future aspiration. In establishing a ceremony to mark success in Key Stage 3, leaders specifically recognise the importance of this period in a pupils education” (OFSTED, 2015).
This praise displayed by OFSTED for School Graduation Ceremonies is positive for other educational establishments who have come under criticism from various sources for staging their own ceremonies. Pupils at Batley can only ‘Graduate” if they meet their goals in English, Maths, Science and 2 other subjects. Other requirements include having a good attitude to learning and good attendance.
Older pupils comments to their younger peers ‘Start working hard as you won’t want to miss out ‘ and ‘I revised harder than usual as I didn’t want my form graduating without me.”
The special day is celebrated with full Academic dress, graduation gowns, caps and photographs. All parents are invited to share in the celebrations at the graduation ceremony.
