The Bar Council advises that your court appearance outfit should be smart business attire. This will usually mean a dark coloured suit, white shirt, either skirt or trousers, or clothing appropriate to your gender identity.
What colour suit to wear to court?
Black, dark grey or black is an advisable colour to wear with a dark tie if appropriate to match. Often lawyers wear a waistcoat under their suit jacket. Your court appearance outfit should not distract from court proceedings in any way.
What to wear to court
In addition to smart business attire, you’ll usually be required to wear:
- A black gown
- White winged collared shirt (for those who identify as male)
- Round collared shirt with tab down the middle (for those who identify as female)
- A wig (although this will depend on the type of court)
