Graduation Gowns originated way back in the 12th century, around the time when universities were being formulated.
Research suggests that the Universities of Paris and Bologna were the first in the mid 12th Century.
The traditional outfit has long lasted the passage of time, surviving Reformation, Civil War and Restoration periods, linking today’s graduate directly to medieval universities which evolved nearly one thousand years ago!
It is thought that long gowns were chosen and felt necessary due to the necessity for warmth and comfort in buildings which lacked heating.
During the reign of King Henry VIII, both Oxford and Cambridge made it a rule that specific academic dress was a requirement.
Today these traditions are still being upheld throughout Universities of the world.
